Tools Required For Fencing - Choosing The Right Tools And Equipment

Everyone knows the importance of using the right tools for the job. Not only does it make the work easier, but will provide you with the equipment needed to complete a job to the highest standard.

When it comes to fencing, your tools play a vital role in both the simplicity and final outcome of your installation. So, to ensure you’re equipped with everything you need to erect your fence successfully, we’ve put together a list of recommended tools and explore why you should consider using them.

1. Insulated fencers graft

Sometimes referred to as a fencing spade, a fencers graft is designed to make digging holes for fence posts easy. It benefits from a long, heavy-duty handle that eliminates the need for bending when digging – your back will appreciate a fencers graft.

When looking to purchase a fencers graft, be sure to consider insulation. Insulated tools are designed to protect you against serious injury in the event of hitting an energised source. So, if being electrocuted isn’t on your to-do list, we recommend opting for an insulated fencers graft.

At Birkdale, we stock an extensive range of insulated tools for all your fencing needs. With over 30 years of experience in the fencing trade, our SiteMate® brand offers specialist fencing tools designed by contractors, for contractors. The SiteMate® insulated fencers graft benefits from a 54” insulated arm that complies with BS8020 1000v standards to help keep you safe during installations.

2. Fast set post concrete

Post concrete is a mixture of cement and ballast to offer a ready solution for setting your fence posts. It can be used with timber, concrete and metal fence posts, while being ideal for smaller jobs around the garden too. From setting ornaments in place to installing rotary dryers, post concrete is an easy-to-use solution for all.

FenceMate® fast set post concrete is a fantastic solution for setting fence posts. It’s quick, straightforward and requires a simple 2 step process for a successful installation:

  1. Fill fence post hole 1/3rd deep with water.
  2. Pour in post concrete evenly around the post until no standing water is visible.

3. Chisel & point crowbars

Used to assist with the digging process, chisel and point crowbars are particularly useful when installing on hard or tough terrain. Not only that, chisel and point crowbars are extremely helpful when working in tight spaces, where using a fencers graft can be tricky.

If you’re looking for a specialist fencing tool to assist with digging fence post holes, take a look at our SiteMate® chisel and point crowbars. We stock varying sizes as well as hexagonal options for all your fencing requirements.

4. Fencing tamper

If post concrete isn’t your preferred option, fencing tampers will allow you to effectively secure your posts in place using the original earth. Fencing tampers are used as earth rammers with round heads, specialised for ramming earth into fence post holes. Like chisel and point crowbars, this tool is particularly useful when operating in confided spaces due to the vertical design. Fencing tampers are generally smaller than typical earth rammers.

5. Level

Whether you’re installing concrete fence posts, timber, or metal, a level is one of the most important tools to have at your disposal. Using a level ensures each and every fence post installed is done so correctly and perfectly upright. Without a level, it’s hard to tell if your fence post needs adjusting, which could effect the rest of your installation.
