DuraPost® Compost Bin - Build a Sustainable Compost Bin

Introducing Duracomposting. Build a sustainable compost bin and watch your garden grow!

Nature is never wasteful. Take a woodland for example. Every spring and summer the trees put on a wonderful spectacle of foliage in a multitudinous variety of greens and bronzes. These leaves fill with sugars to feed the trees’ growth. Every autumn they turn to red, gold and orange, to eventually fall to the ground where they quickly decompose and release their goodness back into the soil. Nature nurtures itself.

So too a garden. But we gardeners love to interfere. We grow things then pull them up and often dump them in the brown bin. When the leaves fall lots of us rake them or get a leaf blower and burn them or throw them away. This is all goodness going to waste. Instead of throwing things out, use them to revitalise your garden next spring by Duracomposting. OK – we just made that word up. But read on and you’ll see that the combination of DuraPost® and composite Prima Boards fits the compost bin requirement perfectly!

Mix it up a bit

Etymologically speaking ‘decompose’ and ‘compost’ are closely related words. ‘Compost’ simply means to ‘put things together’ and, when it comes to garden compost, there are so many things you can include – in fact the more you mix it up, the better. So, to the lawn clippings and garden prunings add vegetable peelings, tea bags, eggshells (they add minerals), coffee grounds (which attract worms), egg boxes or other weak cardboard to create some air pockets and then the autumn leaf fall.

For everything: turn, turn, turn

Bible scholars will know that Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 states ‘for everything there is a season’. When it comes to compost season nothing is more appropriate than to add the words made famous by legendary folk singer Pete Seeger – ‘turn, turn, turn’. Basically, to make good compost you have to turn it and let the air get through it.

That is where the problem starts. Many modern garden centre plastic compost bins make it virtually impossible to get a garden fork in and mix it up to give the worms a chance to do their work. Without doubt the best compost is made in open bins that make it easier to turn the decomposing material.

But open bins have problems of their own. If you make them from timber the carbonic acids created as the foliage decomposes quickly rot them away. Other materials, such as sheets of tin or old corrugated iron roofing just look plain ugly. Also. they’re not easy to work with. Ideally the world of gardening needs an open compost bin that won’t rot away.

Sustainable Duracomposting couldn’t be more simple

Building a compost bin using DuraPost® and Prima Gravel Boards is not only easy but, as you can see from the photograph, adds a degree of chic and sophistication to your garden waste. These compost bins have been erected using corner/gate posts and U channels, combined with stacked composite Prima Gravel Boards to create the sides. The front hasn’t been screwed in from the back, which allows the slotted front boards to be lifted for easy access to the compost – ideal for turning and airing the mulch. Depending on size, reinforcing bars can be added for additional strength.

The result looks good, Prima Gravel Boards come in three colours or can be painted. Better still, manufactured from unplasticised Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVCu), they are incredibly hardwearing and won’t rot. In fact, they’re guaranteed for 25 years.

Last, but by no means least, the very act of composting is all about sustainable gardening by recycling organic material. Recycling is exactly what Prima Gravel Boards are all about too – PVCu is recyclable and can be melted down and reformatted as many as 10 times. That means that if, in say 10 or 15 years’ time, you decide to reconfigure your garden and deconstruct your bin, you can simply put the boards in with your recycling. What’s not to like about that?
